Genealogy will be forever changed…. and not in a good way

Over the years we have seen huge advancements in the world that have helped us do our genealogy. However, the new Canadian Census change might cast a dark cloud over all of those advancements. What was once a huge asset to economists and genealogists, is now more vague and restricted to the public. There are many news articles on the subject…

I’ve included an article from the Vacouver Sun, as and introduction to the changes:

Learn Mandarin and teach the gospel.

click to download

For Fathers day we had two sets of missionaries over for dinner including the Mandarin missionaries.

Most missionaries love friend referrals, but, what I learned is that referrals are especially important for Mandarin missionaries.  Apparently, two young guys in suites, with broken Mandarin rarely get invited in because it is assumed that they are selling something. Mandarin missionaries have most of their success with their ESL Classes held at the church.

So, what does this all mean to you. Leaning a little bit of Mandarin can help open doors for discussion.  A short  “hi”, “how are you” could lead to “Are you interested in improving your English by coming to an English class at my church?”

Below I’ve included a downloadable JPG of basic Mandarin.

Because Mandarin is a tone base language it is really helpful to have some one teach it to you. If you are interested the missionaries would love to come help you learn the basics.

In Beautiful Harmony

Screen Shot of Music Player

Every Sunday I’m  impressed with our ward’s ability to sing the Hymns of the Church.

Have you ever wanted to expand you vocal skills and learn the harmony of some of the hymns? Well, the lds website might be able to help!

In my opinion, the music player  is one of the neatest pages on the church website

http://www.lds.org/cm/display/0,17631,4996-1,00.html#

You can adjust the volume of each  part…. You can start with just your part then slowly introduce the other parts as you are more confident with your part!!!!

Scaled Model Provides Salt Lake Temple Open House Experience

So, last month I stumbled on this really neat article about the new model of the Salt Latke Temple that is in the visitor’s centre of Temple square. What and amazing opportunity for the church to show the tourist who come to temple square  not only it’s majestic outside, but it’s beautiful interior architecture.

Plus! the Architectural model was done by a firm in Toronto!

Extract from the article:

More than a century has passed since the public open house was held for the Salt Lake Temple, but an exhibit featuring a 1:32 scaled replica of the Mormon temple opened today that offers an open house experience of the magnificent building. Earlier this morning, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unveiled the 88-inch tall, near-identical replica of the temple in the South Visitors’ Center on Temple Square. The permanent exhibit will be open to the public starting at 1:30 p.m. today.

[...] Peter McCann Architectural Models of Toronto was commissioned to create the replica last August. Sixteen modelers with different expertise in various parts of the duplication process worked on the project for five months. (Click here for fact sheet, photos and audio sound bites about the creation process).
